Jelosimi Art Center (JAC)

“You cannot carry out fundamental change without a certain amount of madness. In this case, it comes from nonconformity, the courage to turn your back on the old formulas, the courage to invent the future”

. Thomas Isidore Sankara

Introduction

Jelosimi Art Center (JAC) is a community art center based in Oshodi, Lagos Nigeria. The center derives its name from the Yoruba word ‘jelesinmi’ which is an informal school where children learnt with fun and rhymes.

The building of the center was partly funded by Sobayo Abolore ART Foundation (a non-profit organization) with the purpose of creatively engaging in-and-out of school children and youths in order to promote the development of leadership and life skills.

Early exposure to the arts will also help lure at-risk youths away from social violence while inspiring social change. Other members of the immediate community will also benefit from exposure to music, dance, literature, theatre, cinema, poetry, fashion and visual arts.
